Pdf Summary
The American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP), founded February 11, 1950 in California, began as the American College of General Practitioners in Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery. Its founders sought to elevate the standards of osteopathic general practice, protect licensing rights, and promote education and unity within the profession. Early operations were modest, often housed in physicians’ offices, but the organization quickly expanded with increasing state chapters, growing membership, and educational programs.

The 1960s challenged ACOFP profoundly, especially with the “California Merger,” when many California osteopathic physicians were awarded MD degrees, leading to loss of members, assets, and headquarters. ACOFP relocated to Chicago, endured financial and organizational struggles, and later rebuilt with dedicated leadership and member fortitude. The organization eventually established its own headquarters in Arlington Heights, Illinois, in 1990.

ACOFP expanded its focus on education and advocacy, helping establish departments and residency programs in general practice, and worked tirelessly to achieve certification recognition for osteopathic general/family practitioners. The American Osteopathic Board of General Practitioners was founded in 1972 to certify family physicians, reflecting growing professional status and demand for specialty recognition.

Throughout its history, ACOFP faced internal and external challenges, including disputes over specialization and certification, the need for recertification processes, and competition from other emerging specialty boards. Its leadership consistently advocated for the uniqueness of osteopathic family practice, educational excellence, and member services.

The organization changed its name officially in 1993 to emphasize “Osteopathic Family Physicians,” differentiating itself in a changing healthcare environment emphasizing specialization and certification.

ACOFP’s infrastructure matured with growth in osteopathic medical colleges, establishment of state chapters, and engagement of students and auxiliaries. Its leadership, including physicians who served as presidents of both ACOFP and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), guided the College through times of hardship, growth, and modernization.

The history reflects a resilient organization driven by member dedication, advocacy, education, and leadership. Its ongoing evolution positions it as a vital protector and promoter of osteopathic family medicine for the future.
